The Media's "Hypodermic Needle" Solution: Achieving Ideal Beauty

Nip. Tucked. Trimmed...How much are you willing to pay for "cutting edge" beauty?

The rate of cosmetic and plastic surgery, not specific to health-threatening issues, across women all over the world has been exponential in the last decade, with the levels being mind-blowing among certain races of women.

So why are women going to such lengths to "enhance" their physical attributes?

In today's society, where we are bombarded with images of "perfect" women, we are convinced that we ourselves can do more to improve the way we look--and that there are solutions available to make those changes permanent. It's horrifying to hear the increase in plastic and cosmetic surgeries (non-medical related) not only in individual countries but globally! The media hides the risks to these measures very well while providing us with more and more images of thinner and larger-breasted and firm buttock-ed women, and they convince us that these women are truly representative of beauty and we have the opportunity to look like or even better than them.

So many of my Asian friends get the eye-lid surgery that is so prominent among East-Asian women. Although they're cultures do consider larger and double-lidded eyes to be very beautiful, many of my friends talk about how all the popstars and actresses have had it done...very much implying how much media's representation of beauty through celebrity influences women to undergo life-threatening surgical procedures. I can't even tell the difference between girls who have had the eyelid surgery and those who haven't. It seems like once the media gets a woman to reach a level of insecurity or ideal, there's no limit to the "flaws" that can be changed with plastic and cosmetic surgery.

yea well--sometimes the media may not impact a woman to get plastic surgery per se, but they deifnitely impact the woman to find other ways to change her physical appearance. I've heard of so many women dying from going under the knife or having horrible outcomes--how is the media able to manipulate women to proceed with this stuff?
